It seems like prayer can mean different things to different people. You might think it’s a confession. Something that you do to clean up before coming back to God. Your prayers sound like a continual, “I’m sorry,” to God, and that might get old after a while. Maybe that’s why you procrastinate praying or have stopped praying altogether. 

There’s one book that has more prayers than anywhere else in the Bible: the Psalms. And when you read the Psalms, you might be surprised by what you see. Brutal honesty. The writers hold nothing back and bring everything to God. 

Joy. Anger. Fear. Doubt. Confession. Hope.

Psalm 62:8 invites you to “trust in Him at all times; pour out your hearts to Him; for God is our refuge.” 

Pouring out your heart means your whole heart. Are you just letting God see your filtered or polished parts? God isn’t impressed by pretending, and it’s probably exhausting for you. Waiting has to be one of the hardest things in life. Waiting for answers. Waiting for a bad date to end. Waiting for change. Waiting, big or small, is not fun. 

Lamentations 3:25-26 says, “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” God doesn’t waste waiting. He uses it to grow you, strengthen you, prepare you. To make your faith deeper. 

Waiting doesn’t have to be passive, either. Waiting can look like trusting God even when you can’t see very much progress. 

Here’s your one thought today: waiting isn’t wasted when God is in it.

It can be easy to assume Jesus is drawn to strength. He must prefer to use people who are confident, can speak clearly, or have their faith and life together. Maybe Jesus is frustrated by weak or needy people. But the Gospels tell a different story. 

In Matthew chapter 9, Jesus looks at crowds of people described as “harassed and helpless” and “like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matt. 9:36) But Jesus had compassion for them. Not frustration, pity, or indifference. Compassion.

If you’re feeling confused, lost, or like another face in a crowd, Jesus sees you and has compassion towards you. If you’re the kind of tired that sleep doesn’t fix, Jesus moves towards you with compassion. Take this one truth with you today: Jesus is drawn to your weakness and meets you with compassion.

Jesus is speaking directly to you if you’re exhausted by life, expectations, and religion. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

He says, “Come to me.” Not “fix it” or “try this.” Rest begins with a relationship, not with some other solution. How is your relationship with Jesus? Because He can offer you a kind of rest you cannot create for yourself. If you want to bring what’s weighing on you to Jesus, pray this prayer today:

What if peace isn’t something Jesus simply gives? Wait, what? Ephesians 2:14 makes a bold claim: “For He Himself is our peace.” Peace is who Jesus is. And Jesus gives us Himself. 

We try to find peace in all the wrong places. Sometimes we can be following Jesus and still expect peace to come from somewhere, someone, or something other than Him. You won’t find it. 

Instead of treating peace like a condition to receive, consider finding Jesus’ peace in His presence. The peace of Jesus comes from who He is- the ruler, the risen Lord. Your Savior. When you are rooted in Jesus, you are rooted in peace.

You may think that you need more information to strengthen your faith. Another Bible Study. Another sermon. Another podcast. But your faith really grows when you practice the things you learn. Practice things like prayer, generosity, community, obedience, and forgiveness. 

James reminds us that hearing without doing leads to shallow faith, and it’s like you’re lying to yourself. But whoever listens and actually practices these things, they will be blessed in what they do (James 1:23-25). A lived faith is a practiced faith. 

Don’t get overwhelmed, though. Practice looks like one small step. One prayer. One act of obedience. One moment of trust. You don’t have to do everything at once, but please do something that exercises your faith today. Take this one thought with you- faith deepens when it’s lived, not just learned. Life moves fast and speed typically gets rewarded. The hustle and grind never stops. More results. More output. More…burnout? It’s easy to assume God wants the same thing from you, but Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” 

God doesn’t measure your worth by how much you get done or do for Him. He simply wants you to slow down enough to notice His presence in your everyday life. Stillness isn’t laziness. It’s trust.

In Exodus 14, the people of God are trapped between the Red Sea and an Egyptian army. There is no visible way out. They don’t have an escape plan. No amount of strength or strategy can get them out of this. God had brought Moses and Israel this far just to be…trapped?

Then Moses speaks these words. “The LORD will fight for you; you only need to be still.” 

God does not need human strength to accomplish His divine plan. He is not strengthened by your effort, not weakened by your limits. If you read the rest of this story, the Israelites didn’t save themselves. God intervened. 

The same God who delivered them is not limited to what limits you. Having limits is what makes you human. God created you to have limits. Here’s your one thought: Recognize your limits as a gift from God and let Him go beyond them. 

Why do we avoid weakness at all costs? Is it the lack of control? The fear of vulnerability? Being weak, having limits, and needing help is what makes us human. God created you this way. So, if you’re feeling weak, that’s a great place to be. 

David knew what weakness felt like, but he knew God to be different. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” A rock is strong. A fortress protects. A deliverer rescues. The things we can’t do for ourselves, God can. 

He is strong enough to hold your life, big enough to protect, and powerful enough to rescue. Here’s one thought for you: Let God be your strength when you are weak.

Your walk with Jesus, or spiritual growth, rarely happens in dramatic leaps (no matter how much we would like it to be). Who doesn’t like drastic change? Rapid growth? But life with Jesus more often looks like a slow, quiet walk. 

But be encouraged. Because, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians 1:6. 

God doesn’t start things He doesn’t intend to finish. So when your growth feels slow, He’s still forming you. Let that one thought go with you this week; God is still shaping you when progress feels slow. 

Let’s pray through this together.

Some days don’t feel peaceful at all. Thoughts can race, emotions pile up, and life can just move too fast. In all of that noise of life, Psalm 46:1 ways, “God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble.”

Not a distant help. 

Not an occasional help. 

An ever-present help in trouble. 

God steps into the noisiness of your life with you to be your refuge. He is your refuge inside the chaos, not outside of it. And because God is with you, you can have safety, strength and help only He can provide. 

Take this one thought with you: God is your ever-present help today. 

Have you ever hit that kind of tired where even resting feels like work? Your body finally stops moving, but your mind just keeps going? You scroll as an escape, but then you start thinking, and your thinking turns into worry — and somehow you end up more drained than before.

Maybe you’ve said, “I’ll rest when things slow down.”
What if Jesus is saying the opposite? What if rest isn’t the reward for getting everything done — what if it’s actually the way forward?

Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

He doesn’t say, “finish your to-do list, or find rest on your own.”
He just says, come.

So maybe today, rest is closer than you think. Maybe rest starts by doing this one thing — coming to Jesus. Take this ONE thought with you today: when you come to Him, rest finds you.
