Imagine with me that you’ve been walking all day. No breaks. You’ve doubled, maybe even tripled your step goal. And it’s all catching up to you. You’re tired and your feet just need a break. When you can’t find anywhere to sit, what do you do next? You look for somewhere or something to lean on. What are you leaning on today?
Okay, not literally. Most days we lean on our own personal understanding of things. You may lean on your plans. You’ve done the work, the research; you’ve got this. But here’s the thing about our plans: they can’t hold your weight.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”
Try this: make a fist with on hand and squeeze it tight. That’s what leaning on your own understanding can feel like. Gripping. Controlling. Holding on. By the way, how long do you think you can grip and hold on like this? Now, slowly open your hand with your palm up. This is what surrender and trust look like.
Is there a decision, relationship, or worry that you’re gripping tightly today? You can name it, then open your hand as an act of trust. Here’s your one thought: Your trust in God will grow when you stop leaning on your own understanding.
