When was the last time you used the word ‘Lord’ outside of church or talking about Jesus? If we’re not careful, it can become a word that we use a lot but loses its meaning.
When those closest to Jesus started calling Him Lord, they were saying that He is ‘God’ or ‘Master’ of their life. They could’ve just given Him the title “teacher,” but they knew He was more. They knew that He was God, and they wanted Jesus to be their leader. How did they know?
Consider just this one example from Mark 4. Jesus and his friends were crossing a lake in a boat when a huge storm rolled through. Jesus was sleeping, but his friends thought the boat was sinking, so they woke Jesus up.
“They said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down, and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Mark 4:38-41.
Jesus has authority. Creation itself obeys Him. If Jesus has authority over this, what else do you need Him to have control over? Your fear. Your history. Your chaos. Your whole life. Be encouraged by today’s one thought: Following Jesus is not adding Him to your life. It’s recognizing Jesus is already Lord of it.
