Be Still and Remember Who God Is

If your mind won’t slow down… read this today

Share this devotional:
God is God and I am not.

There’s a difference between being physically still and actually being at rest. Your body can stop moving, but your mind keeps racing. You can be calm on the outside, but on the inside, your thoughts, fears, and pressures don’t show any sign of slowing down.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” What’s so special about remembering who God is? There’s simply something powerful, maybe even supernatural, that happens when you remember this: God is God. And I am not.

That is good news. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. God knows what’s best for us and it is good for us to pause long enough to remember who He is. Join us in prayer at … as we be still and remind ourselves that He is God.

A Prayer for Stillness

God, my mind is busy and distracted.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed.

Help me be still for just the next minute.

[pause. If you find your mind wandering, bring it back by reminding yourself, “God is God. And I am not.”]

I can rest knowing that You are God

Please continue to quiet my heart and mind in Your presence.

Amen.

Are you a fan of “new?” New things can be exciting and unsettling at the same time. Is there anything new in your life? New school, new job, new relationship, new responsibilities, new challenges? Everything new brings a certain… uncertainty. Sometimes the hardest thing about anything new is the fear of facing it alone.

In Exodus 33, God invited Moses to do something new and wildly outside of his comfort zone. Moses is unsure and anxious. He goes back and forth with God a couple times but each time, God assures Moses, “I will be with you.” (v.12)

God may be sending you somewhere new but He’s not giving these instructions from a distance. He goes with you.

So, if you’re stepping into something new today like a conversation or decision, God walks with you. Not standing behind you, pushing you forward or yelling from a distance. God goes with you.

If you want to pray before stepping into something new, we have a guided prayer for you below:

God goes with you, into the new
  • God Invites You… And Others

    Feeling Alone

There’s a quiet belief many of us carry… ”I can do faith on my own.”

We listen to podcasts, read books, pray privately, and keep our real struggles mostly to ourselves. And while your personal faith matters, Scripture reminds us that personal faith isn’t a solo journey.

Have you noticed how the Bible describes the church? Not a crowd or a building. A body. And bodies only function when every part is connected. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Not giving up meeting together…but encouraging one another. “

Faith grows in community. This community looks like encouragement, sharing life, confession, worship, and showing up for one another when you don’t feel like you want to or need to. There’s believing and belonging involved in this faith. Here’s your one thought today: God doesn’t want you walking alone.

If you’d like to pray about taking a step toward community, we’ve created a guided prayer for you below:

God doesn't want you walking alone.
  • God is already there

    Anxiety, Trusting God

The people of Israel spent many years feeling lost in the wilderness, and when the time finally came to enter God’s promised land for them, Moses said, The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Thankfully, God goes before us. Your future isn’t empty or as uncertain as it may seem. God is there preparing the way. Whatever lies ahead of you this week, God isn’t surprised by it. We hope you’re comforted by today’s one thought: God is already ahead of you.

If you want to trust God with what lies ahead, pray with us through the prayer below:

When you're unsure, God is already ahead of you
  • God is Always Working

    Feeling Alone, Prayer, Trusting God

Faith isn’t easy. Sometimes the hardest part of this journey is waiting. Waiting for change. Waiting for answers. Waiting for God.

But Scripture reminds us that God isn’t idle. “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” Romans 8:28.

Even when His work is invisible, He is still active. God might be working things together that you can’t yet understand. Here’s today’s one thought: God is working even when you can’t see it. If you want to trust God with what you can’t quite see, pray with us through the prayer below:

  • God is Growing You Through It

    Anxiety, Trusting God

Growth rarely feels comfortable. Growing pains are called growing pains for a reason! Either literally or figuratively, growth is stretching and sometimes slow or frustrating. When growth happens in a difficult season, you can wonder, “is anything good actually coming from this?”

James, one of the authors in the Bible, tells us that followers of Jesus can have joy whenever you face trials because these tests can strengthen your faith and actually produce perseverance. God doesn’t waste a single moment in a difficult season. (James 1:2-4)

When we avoid difficult things in life, we might be avoiding something God is leading us towards. He uses these things to form you into who He’s calling you to become. When you go there with Him, be confident He’ll create in you resilience, character and faith. Take this one thought with you: God uses challenges to shape something good in you.

If you’re feeling these growing pains with God, we’ve created a prayer for you below:

God uses challenges to shape something good in you.
  • God is not halfway committed to you

    Feeling Alone

How often do you look in the rearview mirror? Hopefully you do! It’s good to look back from time to time. The Christian life can feel slow at times. We look ahead and see just how far we have to go, and that leads to discouragement. Am I getting anywhere, Jesus?

Paul reminds us, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians 1:6. Instead of focusing on what still needs to change, look back and see what God has already done. That same God is still shaping you.

He is not halfway committed to you. He is faithful to finish what He started. There is a prayer for trusting God with this at ..

Look back and see what God has already done.
  • God is your helper

    Feeling Alone, Trusting God

How do you depend on God and still have personal responsibility? It can seem like if you rely too much on God, you’re lazy. But if it all falls on you, then life gets heavy. Your strength, your effort, your ability to hold it all together. That’s a lot of weight.

You weren’t meant to carry it all. Psalm 121:2 says, “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

God is your helper. The One who created you (and everything) is not overwhelmed with your life as you might be. He’s not thrown by what you’re facing. Where we might think He is distant or uninvolved, He is helping. The question is, how good are you at accepting help?

If you want to accept God’s help today, pray this prayer with us:

  • God is Your Home

    Anxiety, Feeling Alone, Feeling Lost

Everyone is looking for belonging. A place to be secure and safe. This kind of place where you look forward to being there. This is what home should feel like.

But in a world of instability, this “home” feels lost or constantly shifting. Home can feel like a moving target. Perhaps a homesick Moses writes in Psalm 90:1, “Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.”

God is your true home in every season. Circumstances change. Seasons shift. But God remains. You can return to him to find rest and stability. In Him, you are home. If you want to rest in God today, pray with us through the prayer below:

Lord, you have been our dwelling place
  • God Meets You on Mondays

    Exhaustion

Most of life isn’t dramatic. It’s traffic, quizzes, conversations, emails, small choices, dishes. And sometimes your faith feels insignificant in all of that.

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” One author’s paraphrased version says, “don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God.” (MSG)

What small tasks do you have coming up today? What mundane act can you turn into worship? Yes, God still performs miracles. But He’s also just as present with you on this maybe unimpressive, ordinary Monday. Take this One truth with you: God loves to see your ordinary faith.

  • God Provides Today

    Feeling Alone, Trusting God

Are you needing God to come through? That’s not a bad place to be. That’s exactly where the Israelites were after God rescued them from slavery. Here was their new problem: food. They didn’t have any.

But God said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you.” God provided something they had never seen before, so they knew beyond a doubt it came from Him. Every morning, the ground was covered with this “manna.”

But it was just enough for that day. Why? So they didn’t try to store it all up and depend on their stockpile. God was teaching daily trust.

Sometimes we want tomorrow’s answers today. But God often gives you just enough for this moment. Take this one thought with you- God always provides what you need, maybe it’s just one day at a time. If you want to trust God with what you need today, pray with us through the guided prayer below:

  • God Wanted You First

    Feeling Alone, Prayer

It’s easy to think faith is about getting to God. Trying harder. Being better. Praying more. Trying desperately to figure out what’s missing to finally feel close to Him.

But the story of Jesus begins completely different. Matthew 1:23 gives Jesus a name – Emmanuel, which means God with us. Not distant. Not waiting at the top. Jesus is God with us.

It may not be Christmas, but remember that word ‘Emmanuel’ today. Jesus left heaven to reach you. All this striving to be close to Him can be good, but only if you remember that He’s already close. Here’s one takeaway for you: no matter how much you want God, He wants you more.

If you want to pray through that, keep reading.

No matter how much you want God, He wants you more.
