How would you define shame? Is it the feeling you get after doing something bad? The memories that remind you of what you wish didn’t happen? Parts of that can be true, but shame does something more.
Shame tries to rename you. Imagine wearing a tag that says your name is: Failure. Hypocrite. Unwanted. Disqualified. Unforgivable. You would never do that. But so many of us live like those names are true of us.
Jesus has a better word. Romans 8:1 says, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
If you love Jesus, shame doesn’t get to decide your identity. Jesus does. He gets to do that because He’s dealt with your sin completely. Anything that tries to condemn you has been silenced on the cross. Now grace has the final word.
