Your Words Carry Weight

How many words do you say in a single day?

Share this devotional:
your words have weight

The average person speaks about 16,000 words a day. Do you think you’re above or below average?

The book of Proverbs is known for being the book of wisdom. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Every text message, every comment in a meeting, and even every whispered thought about someone else (and yourself) carries weight.

Are your words bringing life or death to the people and things around you? We often underestimate our words because we say 16,000 of them each day. They feel fleeting, but they actually leave a lasting wake.

Here’s today’s one thought: Your words are more than communication, so steward them well. To pray for your words to bring life today, keep reading:

A Prayer for Life-Giving Words

Father, help me be mindful of every single word I use today

Before I speak or hit send, give me a moment to pause

Help my words be seasoned with grace and love

Help me build others up.

Please forgive me for the times I’ve torn down or vented without purpose

Amen

  • Formation is not a quick fix

    Looking for a Change

Is there something you long for God to change in you? Your thought life, or how you talk about other people when they’re not around? Maybe a bad habit you’ve had for a long time? God is in the business of changing people but it looks different than how we try to change ourselves.

Through the prophet Ezekiel, God promises something remarkable. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.” Ezekiel 36:26. God doesn’t just improve behavior. He transforms your heart.

God knows that real, lasting change begins on the inside and eventually grows outward over time. God takes His time because He’s forming something deeper in you than a quick fix. Spiritual formation is how God patiently transforms your heart. Do you want to invite God into the work He’s doing inside of you? Pray this with us today:

    God transforms your heart

What is missing from your life? More clarity? More security? Answers? Control? Psalm 73 says something might shift everything.

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides You.” Psalm 73:25.

Life may not be perfect, but if you have God, you have enough. When God becomes all that you want, your life is no longer defined by what’s missing. Here’s your one thought today: God is enough for you.

If you want to re-center your life on God, we have a prayer for you below:

  • Jesus is worth rearranging your life

Feeling Lost, Looking for a Change, Trusting God

The first disciples left behind so much when they heard Jesus say three simple words. “Come, follow me.”

They left behind jobs, routines, and any sense of familiarity. Why? Because something about Jesus was worth rearranging their lives for.

He still is. Is there anything Jesus is asking you to leave behind? How has your life been rearranged by Jesus? Following Jesus is worth leaving lesser things behind.

Respond to today’s One Thought with the pray below:

    Follow Jesus!
  • God Cares About Justice

Anger, Anxiety, Looking for a Change, Trusting God

If you’re troubled by the wrong in the world, you’re not wrong, and you’re not alone! Injustice, broken systems, overlooked or mistreated people. These matter to God.

Micah 6:8 says, “…what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

God is not indifferent. He cares about justice more than any of us do, and He wants His people to reflect His heart. What does justice look like for you? Is it a big action? Sometimes it looks like quiet faithfulness. Whatever it is, keep caring about what is right and just. This comes from the heart of God.

If you want to reflect God’s heart for justice today or process through this, pray with us today:

    God cares about Justice
  • I Am In Process

    Looking for a Change

Have you ever believed or said this about yourself? “This is just who I am!” Thank God this isn’t true…

Life with Jesus looks different. Paul writes in Colossians, “You have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Colossians 3:9-10. Following Jesus is not behavior management. It’s a transformation.

Your Creator is in the process of making you new. This takes time, but you will not be trapped in old patterns forever. With the help of God, you can choose to throw off the old and put on the new. You make these decisions every day, sometimes several times a day, and before you know it, you aren’t stuck anymore. You’re making progress and allowing God to transform you more and more into His image.

Do you have an area where you feel stuck or long for change? Pray this with us today:

    You're in a process!
