We don’t really talk about idols, but they’re everywhere. And, no, they’re not all made of gold or silver and sitting on an altar. The Bible talks about idols as anything or anyone that is like a God in your life.
And idols typically start out as good things. Like work, family, grades, your girlfriend or boyfriend. Success. Approval. Something even as good as ministry can become an idol. So, how do good things become something bad like an idol?
Good things become bad when they take God’s place. God says in Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before me.” God’s not insecure. He just knows that everything and everyone else will ask too much of you and give too little back. Idols overpromise and underdeliver. They promise life but slowly take it. God gives life because He is life.
So it’s worth asking: what has your attention these days? Where do you see your trust or obedience going? If you want to surrender your heart back to God, pray with us.
